End Of Summer Wrap Up

The summer is coming to an end and I am mourning a personal loss. About two weeks ago I moved to Austin, Texas to live out my cowgirl fantasies and actively search out Jenna Palek; however, I am grieving over my beloved New England autumn. Instead of sweaters, apple harvest festivals, and cider donuts, I have 95-degree weather, 501’s, and a sputtering AC. Nevertheless, I am glad I made the move (despite the war on women’s bodies but that is a topic for another day). Here are the things that have been getting me through this transition.

Boys Lie Apparel

Boys Lie has become one of my favorite brands over the summer. It is definitely an investment but it is one that is well worth it. The August drop is exceptional but if you are new to the brand, I recommend purchasing the Prisoner of Love hoodie or the Movement V2 hoodie. Until September 6th, 100% of profits from these two hoodies will be donated to the Lillith Fund to help fight the Texas abortion law.

I personally have the Prisoner of Love hoodie. It is nice and lightweight but still super warm and cozy. It is perfect for the Texas nights on the patio when it finally dips below 80-degrees.

We love supporting brands that are vocal about a woman’s right to choose!

Kristin Ess Haircare

During the move, I decided to change hair care systems. I have really thick long hair and have always had a hard time taking care of it. Since middle school, I have been using the Garnier Sleek and Shine shampoo and conditioner but I am a sucker for packaging, and Kristin Ess sucked me in with their baby pink bottles. Honestly, my hair has never looked better.

I picked up The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner, the Blow Dry Mist, and the Leave-In Conditioner. This system works so well for my hair and I’ve had countless compliments on how healthy my hair looks since I’ve switched over.

Kristin Ess is cruelty-free, affordable, available at Target, and has options for all hair types.

Nubble Light Candles

Nubble Light is a small candle company based out of Kittery, Maine. When I lived in the seacoast, I would grab a few scents from my local farmer’s market but they also have an online store.

The candles I managed to bring with me have been providing the ultimate New England comfort in my Texas apartment. Donuts N’ Coffee is my favorite scent from the brand but they have a vast array of amazing autumnal scents to bring warmth to your home.

The House In The Cerulean Sea

This book has been hyped up for a long time and I finally discovered why. I recently discovered my love for reading and The House In The Cerulean Sea only furthered my obsession.

It is so incredibly heartwarming. The plot follows a government worker as he sets out on a secret assignment to observe an orphanage filled with dangerous magical youth. It is a story about found family, acceptance, and love.

I think it is important to note the controversy behind this book. TJ Klune revealed that during his research for this story, he took inspiration from the Sixties Scoop. During the ‘50s and ’60s in Canada, around 20k indigenous children were taken from their families and forced into foster care in an attempt to assimilate them into white culture. While the purpose of this narrative is to show that misconceptions around marginalized groups are harmful and wrong, there are still problematic aspects to this story. One being the simple likening of indigenous people to monsters. Another being the question of whether or not authors should be allowed to write based on narratives that are not their own.

Regardless of the controversy, I think this is a well-written book that is absolutely worth the read. I would also recommend putting in the effort to research the Sixties Scoop and educating yourself on this not-so-well-known part of history.
